Video Creative Testing Protocol
Its own discipline. Three-tier testing, hook testing, variations, volume, analysis, cross-platform repurposing.
Why video creative testing
Video creative variability dominates video ad performance. Two near-identical videos can have 5× ROAS difference. Systematic testing surfaces winning patterns; gut instinct compounds bias.
Three-tier testing
- Concept testing. Different creative ideas (5+).
- Variant testing. Winning concepts get 3–10 variations.
- Iteration testing. Refine winners; minor changes; long-tail optimization.
Hook testing
- First 1–5 seconds critical.
- Multiple hooks per concept tested.
- Hook variations: visual, audio, text overlay, opening question.
- Hook performance via 3-second view rate.
- Winning hook informs subsequent variants.
Variations
- Same concept, different hooks.
- Same concept, different lengths.
- Same concept, different CTAs.
- Same concept, different aspect ratios.
- Same concept, different talent / spokesperson.
- Edit pacing variations.
Volume requirements
| Platform | Concepts/qtr | Variations |
|---|
| TikTok | 30–50 | 3–5 |
| Meta Reels | 20–30 | 3–5 |
| YouTube Shorts | 30–50 | 3 |
| YouTube TrueView | 5–10 | 3–5 |
| CTV | 3–5 anchor | 3 |
